Welcome to the Wollongong Coastal Zone Study Website

In 2009, Wollongong City Council appointed a study team comprised of Cardno Lawson Treloar, GHD Geotechnics and the University of Wollongong to undertake a coastal zone study of the Wollongong Local Government Area (LGA).

The study will provide the necessary understanding to inform the development of a Coastal Zone Management Plan for the Wollongong coastline.

The Coastal Zone Study addressed the following:-

  • Past, present and potential human activity within the study area.
  • Important features and characteristics of the study area (physical, ecological, economic, cultural and social).
  • Key physical, ecological, chemical and other processes that maintain system function or are critical to sustainable use of coastal resources.
  • The potential risks associated with climate change.
  • The extent of modification, condition or degradation of coastal systems.
  • The sustainability of current and potential uses and management practices within the context of natural system thresholds.
  • The risks to coastal users and development from a range of hazards including coastal processes, past, present and future.

The objectives of the project are to:-

  • Identify all the relevant coastal processes and associated hazards impacting on the Wollongong coastline.
  • Delineate the extent of land that could be impacted upon by coastal processes over various planning horizons.

A unique feature of the Wollongong study is that it addressed both coastal and geotechnical hazards due to the unique geotechnical hazards in the Illawarra region. The study was completed in June 2010.
